EcoFoil radiant barrier used in Habitat For Humanity home.
EcoFoil radiant barrier is one of several manufacturers and service providers who collaborated to bring comfort to a Michigan homeowner.
The Macomb County, Michigan affiliate of Habitat For Humanity recently helped a Sterling Heights resident achieve independence through affordable, efficient housing. EcoFoil radiant barrier will play a role in ensuring Ms. Jodie Mekled and her family enjoy lower energy bills this winter and every season after.
EcoFoil radiant barrier, also known as reflective foil, is a thin, lightweight, multilayer material comprised of 99% aluminum with a woven scrim center. The material is easy to use and may be cut with a common utility knife and installed with a hand stapler.
The family moved into their new home in October following an extensive overhaul of the existing property. Ms. Mekled’s home is the first Macomb County project to receive LEED certification, a process which deemed the building environmentally responsible and as having met the highest performance measures. It is also part of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, designed to make a positive impact on neighborhoods suffering from abandonment and foreclosures.
Cellulose created from recycled blue jeans was blown into the attic as conventional mass insulation to combat heat lost into the atmosphere by convection. EcoFoil radiant barrier was added along the rafters and joists to defect radiant heat back to its source. In the summer EcoFoil will keep the home cooler by preventing the sun’s strong rays from entering the interior through the roof. In the winter, EcoFoil will help deflect the heated air rising from the living space back into the home, reducing the amount traditionally lost through the roof as heat naturally rises.
